Tips to Tying Shoes
Learning how to tie shoes is an important achievement here at Kindertown, and is a sign of our K-Town kids growing independence, and self-confidence. We’ve put together some some strategies and tips that parents can use to teach their child how to tie their own shoes at home:
Choose the right shoes: This might sound pretty straightforward, but we can’t tell you how many times children walk into the centre with shoes too big or too small or some without the velcro aid. Shoes with long laces that are not too thick or too slippery are best for learning to tie shoes. Be mindful of these little details, and it’ll make the process of putting on and tying shoes a lot more enjoyable!
Demonstrate the technique: Show your child how to tie their shoes step by step. Break down the process into small, manageable steps, such as tying a basic knot or making a loop. Even little gains are cause of big celebration - a hi-five is always a solid endorsement of success.
Use a practice board: A practice board is a tool that can help children learn how to tie their shoes. You can create a practice board by attaching a shoelace to a piece of cardboard or felt - this is an easy DIY project that doubles as a fine motor table activity!
Create a fun game: Tying shoes can be a fun game. You can turn shoe-tying into a competition or a game, such as racing to see who can tie their shoes the fastest.
Use a rhyme or song: A rhyme or song can help children remember the steps of tying their shoes. For example, the "Bunny Ears" technique is an absolute classic: "Make a loop, and through the hoop, pull and through, and bunny ears are through."
Encourage practice: Encourage your child to practice tying their shoes regularly. The more they practice, the more comfortable they will become with the technique.
Be patient and encouraging: Tying shoes can be a challenging skill to learn, so be patient and encouraging with your child. Celebrate their progress and successes, even if they don't get it right the first time.
